IBM ClearCase/Rational Permissions Issues

IBM’s Rational seems to have been designed to run certain Admin services and tasks as it processes requests. This is an easy thing to fix in Windows XP but may have a few people puzzled when it comes to Windows Vista.

  1. On a XP machine running Rational Tools, always ensure the user is part of the Local Admin Group. This allows the application to run the required processes, create folders on system drives etc…
  2. The scenario is slightly different on a Vista machine. Seeing that Microsoft have designed Vista to by default have the Local Administrator Account disabled, adding a user to this group is pointless. Vista also doesn’t allow a normal user to write files on the system drive…only an Admin. To ensure you have full Admin rights, you would have to Disable the UAC (User Account Control) feature…just go to Start > Control Panel > Security > Security Center > Other Security Settings.
