Where is IT Backoffice headed in this day and age? Are most organizations and companies opting for the outsourced IT solution or the inhouse solution? What advantages does the inhouse solution provide?
I have had the opportunity to work in both environments and I must say that an inhouse IT solution is far better and safer than an outsourced one. My one strong argument is based on security, but today I’ll leave that one for you guys to debate on and just touch on service performance.
We all know that a Systems Admin takes responsibility and is accountable for what happens in his environment. This unfortunately means that failures (downtime) falls under him/her and should be resolved as soon as possible…which brings to question the topic of availability. An inhouse IT Admin treats the company’s backoffice environment as his, usually possesive and also gets occasionally agro when tampered with. This to me is a good thing. It basically means that this Admin has learnt to love his work, his creation and would do anything to make sure it runs smoothly. Consequently, downtime is minimized and performance is increased therefore also improving the company’s image and productivity. This is where it gets a bit hazy for the outsourced Admin guy. Seeing that this environment is not his sole responsibility, he tends to let the late night/early morning failures slide, slow to respond to issues regarding IT backoffice, usually makes up imaginary complex issues to buy him time to resolve the particularly small issue, and eventually affecting the company’s productivity. This is but just a small if not tiny assessment of how the two services differ. You should also realize that the Systems Admin is the only person with full access to EVERYTHING in the environment; from HR employee documents, Payroll, Sales Leads, Marketing Strategies…to even the CEO’s Mail…and that’s just to name a few. If you ask me, IT should be kept within the company.
