Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney was delighted to see his team reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

United were victorious in their last-16 clash with a 2-1 win over Marseille to once again proceed to the latter stages of Europe’s premier competition and stay in with a shout of a possible Treble.

Rooney set up the first for Mexican hot-shotJavier Hernandez after just five minutes, before the 22-year-old scored his second late on to make things more comfortable for the Red Devils.

They were made to sweat a little when Wes Brown scored an own goal late on, but Sir Alex Ferguson’s side saw things through, and Rooney was happy to have seen off the French champions’ challenge.

“We are delighted to be through to the quarter-finals,” Rooney said.

“It was a difficult game, we knew they were a physical team with a lot of power – we just deserved it in the end.”

Hernandez praise

The England striker spoke highly of his partner Hernandez, who has now scored 16 goals in his debut season, hailing him as a superb centre forward.

“He’s (Hernandez) got great movement so I’m playing the position that I did when I started playing professionally. I’m enjoying it and thankfully he’s a finisher,” Rooney added.

“It’s not often forwards get the chance to be on ball and enjoy playing. I enjoyed tonight.”

“Our gameplan was to attack them first half and to get a goal or two up. We managed to get one and we held on.

“We were unfortunate to concede the goal.”

Rooney also stated he would be happy to face any team in the next round, and that they had to beat the best to be the best.

“If you want to win the tournament you need to play and beat anyone,” he said.

“Whoever we get next we’ll be confident we can beat them.”
